On loan from the International League of Conservation Photographers, the 30 photograph exhibit entitled Continental Divide: Borderlands, Wildlife, People and the WALL, shows the diversity of wildlife, cultures and communities that exists in the fragile borderlands, but is now jeopardized by the 630 miles of pedestrian and vehicle fencing dividing the U.S. from Mexico. The border wall has drawn heavy criticism from conservation organizations including the Southwest Environmental Center, Defenders of Wildlife and the Sierra Club, civil-rights groups, private landowners, tribes and communities along the border for reasons as varied as habitat destruction, infringement on property rights, and damage to historic and cultural sites. The exhibit is cosponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies at New Mexico State University, and City of Artists Promotional Association, and the Southwest Environmental Center.

She toured Uganda and Rwanda in 2003 where she drew sketches of the native people in various agricultural settings. She converted the sketches to colorful paintings in her Oregon studio over the past several years. The paintings also include scenes and people from Poland, Albania, Vietnam, Cambodia, Kosovo, Ecuador, and Peru. Please come by and see her work. Exhibit will continue through September 21.

The show displays the evolution of her work. Romero paints images and altars that take a more contemporary approach, while still maintaining the old tradition. Through her artwork, she has been able to create a visual bridge between the historical spirituality of the people of New Mexico, to the current issues that the people face today.

Free and open to public. 575-541-2137 or 575-541-2221. museums.las-cruces.org or www.las-cruces.org The "Las Cruces Collects" exhibition, now showing at the Las Cruces Museum of Art, offers a rare look into the private art collections of area residents, with a wide variety of objects to see. The collection of Richard and Toby White, for example, focuses on Ethiopian Coptic art, but also includes devotional art from Lithuania and the Southwest. Come learn the colorful tales behind these religious artifacts, on display. Highlights from the collection include two retablos from northern Mexico and an array of crosses from Ethiopia and Lithuania, with dating from the 14th to 20th century. A historical map of Africa from the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Abraham Ortelius (the first true atlas, printed in England in 1606) is also on display. Abraham Ortelius is regarded as one of the finest cartographers from antiquity and certainly the most prominent of the 16th century. His concern for accuracy and attention to detail make his beautiful maps both intriguing and aesthetically pleasing.

Sallie later used the money from the sale of the painting to purchase his wedding band. The two have been partners in collecting ever since and are always inspired by their travels. Ms. Ritter states that they always, “come home with at least one purchase.” Kent Jacobs and Sallie Ritter have bequeathed their home for use as a state art museum for Southern New Mexico. The Museum of New Mexico Board of Regents has established that the facility will be called the New Mexico Museum of Art, Jacobs - Ritter Compound. One highlight from the collection is the lithograph “Reposa” by Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros, well-known for his socialist realist murals. “Charles V Spearing a Bull at Vallodalid,” an original etching by the legendary Spanish artist Francisco de Goya, is also on display.

Ann Angelo is a social worker who creates contemporary quilts and banners. Poetry is the media of Rick Bernstein, a scientist. Claude Montes, a sculptor, finds life in marble and stone. Margaret Bernstein, a journalist, works with the written word through interactive books and spiral pieces. Jim Turrentine, owner of Big Picture Studio/Main Street Gallery, is a photographer. Paintings and drawings by Julie Ford Oliver reflect on the cycle of life with cancer. “The exhibit opens on Thursday, since the museum will be closed on Friday in observance of the 4th of July. “Cycles of Life’ is a dynamic exhibit and shows the depth and breadth of arts in our community”

Celtic and western singer/poet Connie Dover and cowboy singer/musician Skip Gorman bring together their deep-down, heartfelt interpretations of the traditional music of the American West, Ireland, and Scotland. Visitors may enter the Dunes Drive until 10 pm on this night and must exit the park by 11 pm.

The tradition goes back to the Spanish colonial period in New Mexico where simple wood crosses were placed at crossroads leading to grave sites. In 1929 Georgia O’Keeffe was inspired by roadside memorials for her series of crosses. The series reflects the intense spirituality and wonder the artist associated with the Southwest. In addition, information on the County Cemetery on East Griggs Street will be presented. Over 150 individuals are buried at this site. Often overlooked, it has recently been cleaned and simple white crosses have been erected to mark many of the graves.

The concert, featuring works of Max Bruch and Kurt Weill, correlates with the Museum’s current exhibit, “Fighting the Fires of Hate”. The exhibit, on loan from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, details the steps that were taken in Germany during the 1930s and 40s to suppress freedom of expression. Performing selections from Bruch’s Opus 83 for clarinet, viola and piano will be John Pleasant, Nancy Morey, and Georgina Lavery. Soprano, Irene Brink, will bring vocal selections by Kurt Weill, accompanied by Barbara Toth at the piano. Ms. Toth will also accompany cellist, Alison Reynolds, for Bruch’s moving “Kol Nidrei”.
