Banned Music featured in Concert at Branigan Cultural Center

Branigan Cultural Center, 501 N. Water Street. 3 pm. The concert is free, but space is limited to 100 guests. Tickets will be available at the Center during normal business hours beginning June 1st. 575-541-2219.  mkshannon@las-cruces.org  The concert will be held in the gallery where the traveling exhibit “Fighting the Fires of Hate” is displayed. Works by Max Bruch and Kurt Weill, whose works were banned in Nazi Germany, will be featured. In 1880 Max Bruch composed several pieces for the Jewish Community in Liverpool. The music became so popular that it was generally, though erroneously, assumed that Bruch, a Lutheran, was of Jewish descent. The Nazis lumped Bruch among a host of "racially impure" composers. Eight pieces for clarinet, viola and piano by Max Bruch will be performed by John Pleasant (clarinet), Nancy Morey (viola) and Barbara Toth (piano). Kurt Julian Weill, the son of a cantor, was a German composer known for his collaborations with writer Bertolt Brecht. The Weill-Brecht collaboration produced a new type of opera using wit to address social follies of their time. Their work was labeled as “degenerate” music and banned in Nazi Germany. Selections by Weill will be performed by soprano, Irene Brink with Barbara Toth at the piano. The arts suffered an incalculable loss as a result of the systematic removal of an entire generation of writers, composers and performers by means of censorship or extermination by the Third Reich. “Fighting the Fires of Hate,” a nationally touring traveling exhibit from the U.S. Memorial Holocaust Museum examines the suppression of freedom of expression. The exhibit remains on display at the Cultural Center through July 18th.

City of Las Cruces hosts, “2009 Music in the Park” Big Sam’s Funky Nation - Jazz, Funk, Soul, R & B

Young Park, 1905 E. Nevada Street. 7 pm. Free and open to the public. 575-541-2200. rcaldwell@las-cruces.org Big Sam's Funky Nation is making their way to Las Cruces for a night of pure, booty-shaking funk. Recently awarded the Big Easy Music Award for "Best Funk Group of 2008," Big Sam's Funky Nation is a driving force of urban funk. The band is led by trombone powerhouse, Big Sam Williams, formerly the trombonist for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who the San Francisco Chronicle calls "the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz." Combining his distinctive trombone riffs with a call-and-response MC style, Big Sam refuses to let the audience sit still. Between the band's solos and his trombone riffs, Big Sam second-lines (a uniquely New Orleans style of street-dance) and gets the crowd going. Big Sam's Funky Nation is not a one man show; the members of the Funky Nation, a group of well trained and experienced musicians with impressive credentials of their own, meet the challenges of their funky band leader. BSFN masterfully combines a rock sensibility with improv-style associated with jazz and the horn-heavy front section that's the hallmark of big band funk. The energy level is high voltage when this band takes the stage, and as Jambase Online proclaims, "as long as groups like Big Sam's Funky Nation helm communal happenings like this one the funky fever is bound to spread." Don't miss this funky bit of NOLA in Las Cruces! Come out and show your love at the upcoming Big Sam's Funky Nation show at the Young Park - you'll be sure to Shake Yo Thang! Come and enjoy free entertainment with your friends and family and don’t forget a lawn chair and your ice tea.
