Battle of the Books is a book-related competition for students in grades 4-9. Students are quizzed about books that they have read from the designated Battle of the Books reading list. Teams are sponsored by schools or public libraries, and will compete in either the Elementary or Middle School Divisions. Students in grades 4-5 compete in the Elementary Division, while students in grades 7-9 compete in the Middle School Division. Schools and libraries may enter either division, but not both unless the school or library serves a student population in grades 4 through 8 or 9. (See rules page for additional requirements.) While teams enter the Statewide Battle as a group, participants then compete as individuals on teams that consist of students from all over the state.

May 7 - 9 2nd Annual Museum Railroad Days Las Cruces Museum, 361 Mesilla Street. 10 am - 4 pm. 575-647-4480. The Las Cruces Railroad Museum is located in the historic Santa Fe Depot. The museum interprets the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad’s impact of the railroad on the Mesilla Valley and Las Cruces. Photographs, artifacts, and text panels throughout the museum interpret local history, railroadiana, and the history of several local AT&SF employees. There are three model layouts including one everyone is invited to run. The museum also offers lectures, classes for adults and children, and guided tours for large groups by appointment. We host two major events each year: the Old Fashioned Holiday Display on the first Friday of December from 5 - 8 pm and Railroad Days which will be held on May 9, 2009. This is the second year that the Rail Runner will make the trip South to be a part of the Railroad Days celebration. During the event, which celebrates Las Cruces’ railroading past, present, and future, the Rail Runner will be open for tours (no rides) and Rail Runner staff will be on hand to answer questions. There is no fee to participate. 575-541-2154. www.las-cruces.org/museums or mkshannon@las-cruces.org The Rincon Cemetery, the Old Rincon Cemetery, and a scenic overlook erected by Our Lady of All Nations Catholic Mission. Over two hundred gravesites are either unmarked or have markers such as wooden crosses without legible identification. The Rincon Cemetery is approximately 30 miles north of Las Cruces and 5 miles east and south of Hatch. Access to the cemetery is through the north side parking lot of Rio Valley Chili Company located at intersection of Saint Elaine Road and County Road E/09 (also known as NM 140 and NM 154). The tour starts at 10:00 a.m. in the cemetery. Participants should allow for a 2 hour walking tour, little or no seating, over very uneven terrain, where trip hazards may exist. In addition, participants are strongly encouraged to wear sturdy walking shoes, long sleeved shirts, hats, sunscreen, and carry bottled water. There is no fee to participate. No registration is required. Those who prefer to caravan to the cemetery should meet with Cultural Center staff in the parking lot of KMart located at Highway 70 and I-25. Caravan will depart the parking lot promptly at 9:30 a.m.

The exhibit provides a vivid look at the first steps the Nazis took to suppress freedom of expression, and the strong response that occurred in the United States. The book burnings became a potent symbol during World War II in America’s battle against Nazism. The slogan “Books Are Weapons in the War of Ideas,” which appeared in posters, proclamations, radio broadcasts, and scores of other outlets signaled the importance of books and free thought.
